Include wheels and handles
Stand the suitcase on a hard floor and measure the complete exterior. Recessed or protruding wheels still count, as do fixed handles and exterior pockets.
Airline baggage rules · Verified September 22, 2026
There is no universal carry-on size. A 22 × 14 × 9-inch bag works for several major U.S. airlines, but international and low-cost carriers often use different dimensions, enforce weight limits or reserve the overhead-bin bag for certain fares. Check the operating airline for every segment before packing.
Verification standard: The chart links directly to each airline’s baggage page and reflects the standard allowance displayed when checked. Your fare, cabin, route, status, aircraft and codeshare carrier can change the allowance. Recheck the airline after booking and again before departure.

| Delta | 22 × 14 × 9 in | No standard maximum on most routes | Partner and codeshare rules can differ. |
| United | 22 × 14 × 9 in | No standard maximum published | Basic Economy allowance depends on route and ticket rules. |
| Southwest | 24 × 16 × 10 in | No standard maximum published | The largest standard U.S. dimensions in this chart. |
| JetBlue | 22 × 14 × 9 in | No standard maximum published | Confirm that the fare includes an overhead-bin bag. |
| Alaska Airlines | 22 × 14 × 9 in | No standard maximum published | Bag must be stowable without assistance. |
| Air Canada | 21.5 × 15.5 × 9 in (55 × 40 × 23 cm) | Must be light enough to store unaided | Personal-item dimensions are separate. |
| British Airways | 22 × 18 × 10 in (56 × 45 × 25 cm) | Up to 23 kg / 51 lb | You must be able to lift it into the bin. |
| Lufthansa | 21.7 × 15.7 × 9 in (55 × 40 × 23 cm) | 8 kg / 17.6 lb | Number of cabin bags depends on cabin class. |
| Air France | 21.7 × 13.8 × 9.8 in (55 × 35 × 25 cm) | Typically 12 kg combined in Economy | Combined allowance includes the personal accessory. |
| Ryanair | 21.7 × 15.7 × 7.9 in (55 × 40 × 20 cm) | 10 kg / 22 lb | The larger cabin bag requires the relevant fare or add-on. |
| easyJet | 22 × 17.7 × 9.8 in (56 × 45 × 25 cm) | Up to 15 kg / 33 lb | A large cabin bag requires an eligible seat, fare or add-on. |
Dimensions are shown height × width × depth where the airline publishes that orientation. Convert carefully when an airline lists centimeters. Airline pages remain the controlling source.
Avoid the gate surprise
Stand the suitcase on a hard floor and measure the complete exterior. Recessed or protruding wheels still count, as do fixed handles and exterior pockets.
Soft bags bulge and expansion zippers add depth. Pack the actual load, close every zipper and measure the widest point instead of trusting the product name.
Some airlines weigh the carry-on alone; others combine it with the personal item. Include the laptop, liquids, shoes and tech that make a light empty bag unexpectedly heavy.
On a codeshare, “marketed by” and “operated by” may be different airlines. Use the operating carrier’s page for the aircraft segment and check every connection.
If an agent takes your carry-on at the gate, remove portable chargers, spare lithium batteries, medication, travel documents and valuables. Keep them in the cabin with you.

01OS Pick · safest compact dimensions
Published size: 21.5 × 13.5 × 8.07 in
Why it earns a place: The most conservative dimensions of our current luggage edit, making it the better starting point for stricter international routes.
Know before buying: Its 31-liter capacity requires a disciplined capsule.

02OS Pick · exact 22 × 14 × 9 shell
Published size: 22 × 14 × 9 in
Why it earns a place: The exterior matches the common U.S. published limit and the front compartment keeps a laptop accessible.
Know before buying: The front pocket reduces main-compartment capacity, and airline weight rules still apply.

03OS Pick · rideable smart luggage
Published size: 21.5 × 14.5 × 10.3 in · 18.5 lb empty
Why it earns a place: A removable 73.26Wh battery, USB charging and rideable design make it the strongest smart-luggage choice in the edit.
Know before buying: It exceeds the common 22 × 14 × 9-inch limit in width and depth and is heavy before packing. Confirm the operating carrier’s size, weight and battery rules.

The rule most travelers miss
A compliant suitcase can still be excluded when a basic or low-cost fare includes only a small under-seat item. Confirm the number of cabin bags before paying for a seat or luggage add-on.
A compact hard shell can fail because it is too heavy. If the carrier publishes an 8–10 kg cap, start with the empty-bag weight and reserve capacity for clothing, shoes and technology.
Regional aircraft can have smaller bins than the airline’s standard fleet. A bag that meets published dimensions may still be tagged at the gate because the physical bin cannot hold it.

Direct answers
A bag around 21.5 × 13.5 × 8 inches is a safer starting point than an oversized U.S.-style carry-on, but it is not universally compliant. Always check the operating airline and the fare.
Yes. Published exterior limits generally include fixed wheels and handles, so measure the full packed bag at its widest points.
Check the operating airline shown on the ticket, not only the airline that sold it. The operating carrier controls the aircraft and may enforce its own cabin-bag rules.
Yes. Limited overhead space, a small aircraft or boarding conditions can still result in a gate check. Remove power banks, spare lithium batteries, medication, identification and valuables first.
Choose, then pack
Use the airline limit first, then build a realistic 7-, 10- or 14-day capsule around the space you actually have.
