Portable-charger rules · Updated September 18, 2026

Can you bring a portable charger on a plane?

Yes—but put it in your carry-on, never your checked bag. Most ordinary power banks at or below 100 watt-hours can travel without airline approval. Larger 101–160 Wh batteries require airline approval, and an airline may set stricter limits.

How to pack a power bank for airport security and the flight

01

Find the Wh rating

Look for watt-hours on the power bank. If only voltage and amp-hours are shown, Wh equals volts multiplied by amp-hours.

02

Protect the terminals

Keep the unit in a protective pouch and away from loose metal that could contact exposed terminals.

03

Keep it accessible

Do not bury it in a suitcase that may be gate-checked. If the bag leaves the cabin, the power bank comes out first.

04

Check the airline

Airlines may impose lower limits, quantity restrictions or rules about using or charging the unit in flight.

Do not fly with a damaged or recalled battery

If it is swollen, cracked, overheating, smoking or under a safety recall, leave it home and follow the manufacturer’s disposal guidance.

Portable charger FAQ

Can a portable charger go in a checked bag?

No. The FAA requires power banks and other spare lithium batteries to travel in carry-on baggage only.

What if my carry-on is gate-checked?

Remove the power bank and keep it with you in the aircraft cabin before handing over the bag.

How large can a power bank be?

Lithium-ion batteries up to 100 watt-hours are generally allowed. From 101 through 160 Wh, airline approval is required and the FAA limits passengers to two larger spare batteries.

Is a 10,000mAh power bank allowed?

Most standard 10,000mAh phone power banks are well below 100 Wh, but verify the Wh marking on the device and the airline’s current policy.
