Sayulita vs. Punta Mita

Two neighboring beach escapes with completely different rhythms—which one is right for your trip?

The short answer

Should you stay in Sayulita or Punta Mita?

Choose Sayulita for walkability, surf-town energy, independent restaurants and more price variety. Choose Punta Mita for gated calm, polished beach clubs, golf, tennis and resort ease. With five nights or more, split the stay: two nights in Sayulita and three in Punta Mita.

We have stayed in both, and the choice is less about which destination is objectively better than how you want the trip to feel. Sayulita puts the beach, independent restaurants and nightlife within an easy walk. Punta Mita trades that spontaneous town energy for gated calm, polished beach clubs, golf, tennis and resort-level ease.

01

Where to stay

The hotel note

Sayulita: La Puesta or Hotel Ysuri

Choose Sayulita when you want to walk to the beach, restaurants and town. We have stayed at both; La Puesta works for a quieter beachfront edge and sunset drinks, while room position matters at any central hotel if you are sensitive to nightlife noise.

Punta Mita: Las Terrazas

Our Las Terrazas B43 stay came with a golf cart and club-access cards, which made the gated community easy to enjoy. Confirm the exact beach-club access, guest fees and transportation included with your individual rental before booking.

Luxury extension: One&Only Mandarina

Mandarina is a separate ultra-luxury resort north of Sayulita—not part of Punta Mita. Add it when the goal is a secluded jungle-and-beach finale rather than another town stop.

02

What earned the time

Do this

Choose Sayulita for movement and spontaneity

Walk between the beach and town, take a surf lesson, shop small boutiques and decide where to eat as you go. The tradeoff is more noise, traffic and visible bustle.

Choose Punta Mita for amenities

Our standout days centered on Pacífico Beach Club, El Surf Club and time inside the gates. Golf, beach clubs and racquet facilities reward advance planning rather than improvisation.

Book tennis before arrival

Punta Mita tennis lessons and clinics can require direct reservations, player details and advance cancellation notice. We booked a private lesson because the clinic level was not the right fit.

03

The food edit

Eat here—or eat this way

Sayulita

Let the town stay flexible, but protect one sunset. La Puesta was our setting for sunset cocktails, and its beachfront Mazo Cocina currently serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Punta Mita

MINA and El Surf Club were firsthand favorites. Access and reservation rules can depend on where you are staying, so have the concierge confirm them before building the day around a table.

Before you go

The details that change the trip.

Sayulita is the better fit for walkability, independent restaurants, surf-town energy and generally more price variety.

Punta Mita is the better fit for privacy, beach clubs, golf, tennis and a more controlled resort experience.

The gated Punta Mita community and the nearby town of Punta de Mita are not interchangeable; confirm exactly where a hotel, villa or restaurant sits.

For five nights or more, a two-night Sayulita and three-night Punta Mita split gives the contrast without turning the trip into constant packing.

Traffic from Puerto Vallarta airport can change transfer time sharply. Compare a prearranged transfer with the hotel or villa car before arrival.
