A clear-water cove in Sardinia

Sardinia in 7 Days

Two realistic routes—north or south—designed around water, not windshield time.

The short answer

Can you see Sardinia in seven days?

Yes—but choose the north or the south and change hotels only once. For a first week, fly into Olbia for Costa Smeralda and La Maddalena, or Cagliari for the capital, Villasimius and Chia. Crossing the island to collect every headline stop turns a beach trip into a driving trip.

This plan intentionally gives you two alternatives rather than one unrealistic island-wide loop. Each route protects a boat day, a weather-flex day and enough unstructured time to enjoy the hotel you paid for. If you are still choosing a coast, start with our complete Sardinia first-trip guide.

01

Option one

The seven-day north Sardinia route

Day 1

Arrive in Olbia

Collect the car, settle near Costa Smeralda and keep the first dinner close to the hotel.

Day 2

Costa Smeralda beach day

Choose one beach area and one sunset reservation. Do not spend the day collecting beach names.

Day 3

La Maddalena boat day

Book the marina and departure point before choosing the hotel; summer traffic changes a seemingly short transfer.

Day 4

Slow resort day

Keep a full day for the pool, a long lunch and the beach nearest your hotel.

Day 5

Move west

Change bases once, toward Alghero or the northwest, with a worthwhile lunch stop rather than a string of detours.

Day 6

Alghero and the coast

Pair the old town with one coastal experience; leave enough time to return before dinner.

Day 7

Departure buffer

Use the final morning locally and protect enough time for fuel, the rental-car return and airport check-in.

02

Option two

The seven-day south Sardinia route

Day 1

Arrive in Cagliari

Collect the car, check in and use the first evening for a walk and dinner rather than a long coastal drive.

Day 2

Cagliari and Poetto

Start with the city, then move to the beach when the light and heat make sightseeing less appealing.

Day 3

Villasimius coast

Choose one or two neighboring beaches and reserve any boat excursion before arrival.

Day 4

Second beach or boat day

Build in weather flexibility instead of putting the only water day on a fixed date.

Day 5

Move toward Chia

Change bases once and make the transfer part of the trip with one planned coastal stop.

Day 6

Chia or Teulada

Give the southern beaches a full day; parking and beach access are easier when you arrive early.

Day 7

Return toward Cagliari

Keep the final drive simple and avoid a remote last-night stay before an early flight.

Reservation sequence

Book the parts that control the route first.

Choose Olbia or Cagliari before comparing hotels.

Reserve the rental car and confirm automatic transmission if needed.

Choose two hotel bases, then check the real drive to the marina.

Book the boat day with one open day beside it for weather flexibility.

Reserve only the dinners worth structuring the day around.

Compare boat days

Check the departure marina before booking.

A beautiful itinerary can fail if the excursion starts ninety minutes from the hotel. Compare the exact port, group size, stops, cancellation terms and what is included.

Sardinia itinerary FAQ

Can you see Sardinia in seven days?

Yes, if you choose one half of the island and change hotels no more than once. Trying to combine Costa Smeralda, Alghero, Cagliari and the far south in one week creates a road trip with too little beach time.

Is north or south Sardinia better for a first trip?

Choose the north for Costa Smeralda polish, granite coves and a La Maddalena boat day. Choose the south for Cagliari, broad beaches and a more relaxed coastal road trip. Neither is universally better; the right airport and hotel style should decide.

Do you need a car in Sardinia?

A rental car is the practical choice for either itinerary because many beaches, hotels and marinas are not connected by a convenient schedule. Confirm parking and rental terms before booking.

04

The useful reality check

What not to put into one week.

Do not build a first seven-day itinerary around Olbia, Alghero, Cagliari and the Gulf of Orosei unless the driving itself is the purpose. Sardinia rewards depth: an early beach arrival, a long lunch, a boat day that is not squeezed between checkouts, and a hotel afternoon that stays on the calendar. If you have ten to fourteen days, a broader route becomes more reasonable—but it should still use geographic clusters rather than daily cross-island drives.

For clothing, choose breathable daytime pieces, a secure sun hat, swimwear you can rotate, footwear with grip and at least two elevated dinner looks. The island’s polished resort pockets do not require a different outfit every night, but one overly casual beach cover-up should not be doing every job.
